DIG stands for 
Deputy Inspector General. It is a one- star rank in the Indian Police Service. This is a senior rank than Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) or Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). An officer holding this position works under the Inspector General of Police (IG) or Joint Commissioner of Police.

  • To report to the Inspector General (IG) and carry out the instructions given by him/her.

  • Solve cases, maintain Law and Order within his competence provided that he has the larger area under control compared to Superintendent of Police.
  • Maintain efficiency and discipline in the Police department and among fellow officers.
  • Take control over cases that are beyond the powers allocated to the Superintendent of Police.
  • The Deputy Inspector General of Police acts as a representative of the Inspector General of Police when issues arise for the District Magistrate.
CAPF: CAPF is the short form of Central Armed Police Forces. It is one of the seven security forces in India which comes under the authority of the Ministry of Home Affairs. A police officer to be promoted as DIG to the CAPF Department is known as Deputy Inspector General of CAPF.
NIA: NIA is the abbreviation of the National Investigation Agency. The NIA is a Law Enforcement Agency that came into effect existence on 31st December 2008 and established by the Indian Government with the enactment of the National Investigation Act, 2008 by the Indian Parliament. NIA came into existence after the Mumbai Terror attack to combat terrorism and keep it in check. The police officer who is to be promoted as DIG to the NIA Department is known as Deputy Inspector General of NIA.
IB: IB is the contraction of the Intelligence Bureau is India’s internal Intelligence Agency. The IB is the rebirth of the Central Intelligence Bureau in 1947 under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Senior Superintendent Police of who is to be promoted as DIG to the Intelligence Bureau is known as the Joint Director of IB.  
SVPNPA: SVPNPA is the abbreviation of Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Police Academy which is a premier training center and was exclusively established for IPS officers who are trained rigorously for a period of 11 months. When a police officer is being promoted to the DIG position to the SVPNPA, he/she is referred to as Deputy Director of SVPNPA.
CBI: CBI is the abbreviation of Central Bureau of Investigation. The CBI is a prime investigating agency of India and operates under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions. The CBI investigates several economic crimes, special crimes, and cases of corruption. A police officer eligible for promotion to become the DIG in CBI is known as Deputy Inspector General of CBI.
The candidate who wishes to join the police force as DIG has to first appear in the Civil Services Exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission to become an IPS officer, clear the exam, and get selected under the Indian Police Service rank. After completion of training as IPS, the IPS trainees usually start as Deputy Superintendent of Police of a district. It may take around 10 - 12 years to get promoted as Deputy Inspector General of Police.\

  • The candidate must be a citizen of India (Note: Only a candidate who is of Indian Nationality can be recruited for IAS and IPS).
  • The candidate must be a citizen of Nepal
  • The candidate must be a citizen of Bhutan
  • The candidate must be a Tibetan refugee who came to India with the intent of permanently settling in India.
  • The candidate must be of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intent of permanently settling in India.
Educational Qualification
  • The candidate appearing for the UPSC Civil Service Exam should fulfill the following Educational Qualifications:
  • The candidate must possess a valid Bachelor's degree from any recognized university.
  • The candidate must have appeared or intend to appear their final semester exams can apply, given that they have valid proof to provide while submitting the Mains application.
  • The candidate who has completed a technical bachelor's degree that is recognized by the Government of India is also eligible to appear for the UPSC exam
  • The candidate who has passed the final semester exam of MBBS but is yet to complete their internship can appear for the Mains examination.
UPSC is the abbreviation of Union Public Service Commission which is a premier institution responsible for recruitment and appointment of personnel to the All India Services consisting of Group A and Group B services. Its prime responsibility is to conduct examinations and appoint personnel to the designated services under the All India Services.
All India Services (AIS) include the civil services of India, predominantly Indian Administrative Services (IAS), Indian Foreign Services (IFS), Indian Police Services (IPS). The UPSC board conducts the examination on an annual basis and candidates who clear the examinations are appointed to their respective services based on rank which is also known as AIR ( All India Rank).
Indian Police Service (IPS) is one of the prestigious and honorable postings that a person can attain in the UPSC exams. It requires a high-level rank to be scored in the exam. The UPSC All India Service exam consists of three stages to clear the exam. The three stages are Mains, Prelims, and Interview. The candidate has to clear all three stages and score the minimum cut off point according to his/her category. Upon clearing the exam, the candidate is recruited and trained in Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Police Academy for 11 months.

  • The number of attempts for all the general category students is 6, OBC category students are 9 and for SC/ST category students is unlimited.
